Publicity Assistant

Hurst is looking for a Publicity Assistant to join our team. You will be reporting directly to our Publicist and will help in the promotion of all of Hurst’s trade and academic books. This is an exciting opportunity to join our small but dynamic team at our offices in historic Somerset House in central London. The role will involve all aspects of publicity, from organising events and drafting press releases to tweeting, pitching to media outlets, and helping run our podcast. Although we are a small publisher, we consistently get coverage for our books in mainstream media including the BBC, The GuardianFinancial Times, and The Sunday Times, and run a busy publicity department.

We’re looking for someone who will spot opportunities in unlikely places, is up to date on current affairs, can think of new angles to pitch a book to readers, and most importantly, has a genuine interest in the books we publish. Although there is a lot of room to be creative, publicity admin is a big part of the job, so strong organisational and writing skills, as well as attention to detail, are essential. Some publishing experience would be a bonus but is not necessary.

Responsibilities will include:

  • managing paperback book campaigns
  • writing press releases
  • creating review lists
  • proofreading copy
  • publicity research
  • organising events
  • pitching authors to media contacts, literary festivals, and event venues
  • coordinating book prize submissions
  • running social media and our podcast ‘AfterWords’ with the sales and marketing colleagues
  • fielding media and author queries

About us:

Hurst is an independently owned and run non-fiction press based in London but publishing globally. We produce approximately 90 new titles per year in the fields of history, politics, sociology, war studies, and religion with particular strength in our lists covering African, Asian, East European, and Middle East Studies. Although we are a small indie publisher, our titles have been shortlisted or won the following international awards: Orwell Prize (UK), PEN/Jean Stein Book Award (USA), Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year Award (UK), Pushkin House Book Prize (UK), the Bread and Roses Award (UK), British Academy Book Prize for Global Cultural Understanding (UK), Los Angeles Times Book Prize (USA), James Beard Award (USA), Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing (Canada), and many others.

Salary range: £23,000 – £25,000, depending on experience.

Additional information:

The role is a full-time permanent position based on a hybrid model of working from home and from our office in Somerset House (or fully office based if preferred). The working pattern and flexible hours can be negotiated. The job requires someone based in London since attendance at book events and at meetings with authors, colleagues and the media is mandatory. We can only consider candidates legally eligible for work in the UK as of 2023. For the right candidate, we can consider applicants completing university this academic year.

Please submit a cover letter and CV to Raminta Uselyte ([email protected]) by 5pm on April 14th. Interviews will be held in person at Somerset House on May 11th

Editorial Freelancers

Hurst is always on the lookout for experienced freelance copyeditors and proofreaders, particularly those with a background in Islamic and Middle Eastern studies and African history and politics. Applicants must have experience of working on scholarly non-fiction books as well as those towards the ‘trade’ end of the spectrum. To apply, please send your CV, with details of any areas of expertise and any professional references, to the Senior Editor, Lara Weisweiller-Wu.

Submissions

Hurst welcomes manuscript submissions via email. These should be sent to Editorial. Please bear in mind that Hurst publishes only serious non-fiction for adults, and note the fields in which we specialise. The best way of doing this is by consulting our website.

Your submission should include the following:

• A synopsis or outline running to at least 1,500 words
• Your CV
• List of publications (where appropriate)
• Contents page of draft chapter titles
• Notes on competing works in the literature
• Details of photographs, illustrations, tables and other non-textual matter in the manuscript
• The book’s proposed word length
• Proposed completion date of the manuscript

We will endeavour to respond to your email in a few working days but please bear with us if this is not the case.

Finally, do not send files full of illustrations and other pictorial material without consulting with us first as these may be rejected by our email server.
