Production Assistant (Part-Time)

This is an exciting opportunity for someone in the early stages of their publishing career to join our busy, dynamic indie press. You will be reporting directly to our Production Director and will play an essential role at every stage of production, assisting on both general-interest and academic books. As we are a close-knit team, you will also gain insight into Editorial, Sales & Marketing and Publicity, working closely with those colleagues.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • taking the lead on author management during production;
  • checking and marking up proof corrections;
  • liaising with our production partners, e.g. typesetters, proofreaders & indexers;
  • commissioning maps to illustrate our books;
  • managing our files for eBooks, other electronic platforms & marketing assets;
  • commissioning cover designs for press review copies;
  • text production for paperback editions.

Skills and qualities required:

  • Knowledge of and interest in global current affairs
  • Excellent written communication skills, and a good eye for detail
  • Outstanding levels of organisation and capacity for independent work
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to learn fast in a small team
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office

Start date: August 2023.

Role: Permanent, part-time, at least 20–24 hours per week (equivalent to 2.5–3 days per week), with working hours and days to be mutually agreed.

Location: Hurst has a hybrid model, with each staff member working both from home and in our office at Somerset House, Central London. The role can be based anywhere, including fully office-based if preferred, but at a minimum you must be able to travel to London or Brighton once a fortnight to work in person with the Production Director, and to travel to London once a month to work in person with the whole team.

Salary range: £24,725 – £26,875 pro rata (depending on experience).

Please note: we can only consider candidates with the permanent right to work in the UK.

Please submit a cover letter and CV to Daisy Leitch ([email protected]) by midnight BST on Wednesday 28 June. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted the week of 3 July to complete a test and invited to interviews (held the week of 17 July).

Editorial Freelancers

Hurst is always on the lookout for experienced freelance copyeditors and proofreaders, particularly those with a background in Islamic and Middle Eastern studies and African history and politics. Applicants must have experience of working on scholarly non-fiction books as well as those towards the ‘trade’ end of the spectrum. To apply, please send your CV, with details of any areas of expertise and any professional references, to the Senior Editor, Lara Weisweiller-Wu.

Hurst welcomes manuscript submissions via email. These should be sent to Editorial. Please bear in mind that Hurst publishes only serious non-fiction for adults, and note the fields in which we specialise. The best way of doing this is by consulting our website.

Your submission should include the following:

• A synopsis or outline running to at least 1,500 words
• Your CV
• List of publications (where appropriate)
• Contents page of draft chapter titles
• Notes on competing works in the literature
• Details of photographs, illustrations, tables and other non-textual matter in the manuscript
• The book’s proposed word length
• Proposed completion date of the manuscript

We will endeavour to respond to your email in a few working days but please bear with us if this is not the case.

Finally, do not send files full of illustrations and other pictorial material without consulting with us first as these may be rejected by our email server.

Hurst does not currently offer internships. Please check the website regularly for future opportunities.
