• Your CV

• Contents page of draft chapter titles
• Notes on competing works in the literature

Vacancies
PUBLICIST
We’re recruiting! Hurst is looking for an innovative publicist to join our small but dynamic team at our offices in historic Somerset House in central London. You will report directly to our Associate Publisher and work alongside our current Publicist in promoting our trade and academic lists. The role will involve all aspects of publicity: liaising with literary editors and broadcasters, organising and attending events, drafting press releases and social media posts, working closely with authors to raise their profile, and strategic planning. Although we are an indie house publishing fewer than 90 titles per annum, we consistently achieve coverage for our books in mainstream outlets including the BBC, The Guardian, Financial Times, and The Sunday Times. In the past year, our titles have been shortlisted or won the following prestigious international awards: Orwell Prize (UK), Los Angeles Times Book Prize (USA), James Beard Award (USA), Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing (Canada), and the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences non-fiction book award (South Africa).
We’re looking for someone who will spot opportunities in unlikely places, is up-to-date on current affairs, can think of new angles to pitch a book to readers, and most importantly, has a genuine interest in the books we publish. Creativity, strong organisational and writing skills, as well as attention to detail, are essential.
Applicants must have a minimum of 18 months experience in the world of books, whether that be book publishing, bookselling, literary festivals, etc. The position would suit someone ready to step up to a new challenge and take on book campaigns. Direct book publicity experience is not a pre-requisite, but a passion for global affairs is.
Responsibilities will include:
-managing campaigns
-working directly with our authors
-writing press releases and social media content
-preparing review lists for galley and finished book mailings
-selling serial rights to newspapers and magazines
-organising and attending events
-pitching authors to media contacts, literary festivals, and event venues
-coordinating book prize submissions
-podcast strategy (both for our own AfterWords and other audio opportunities for our authors)
-admin work with pulling quotes, updating bibliographic data, processing review copies, etc.
-coordinating with our North American partner, Oxford University Press, NY.
About us:
Hurst is an independently owned and run non-fiction press based in London but publishing globally. We produce approximately 90 new titles per year in the fields of history, politics, sociology, war studies, and religion with particular strength in our lists covering African, Asian, East European, and Middle East Studies. We aim to publish books that add meaningfully to conversations, or start new ones.
Salary range: £25,000 – £27,000, depending on experience.
Additional information:
The role is a full-time permanent position based on a hybrid model of working from home and from our office in Somerset House (or fully office based if preferred). The working pattern and flexible hours can be negotiated. The job is best suited for someone based in London as attendance at book events and meetings with authors, colleagues, and the media are required. We can only consider candidates legally eligible for work in the UK as of 2022. Please send two separate application emails: one should have your documents anonymised (no names, no references to gender, age or contact details, no links to writing samples displaying your name).
Please submit a cover letter and CV to Kathleen May (ka[email protected]) by 5pm on June 17th. Interviews will be held week commencing June 27th.
Editorial Freelancers
Hurst is always on the lookout for experienced freelance copyeditors and proofreaders, particularly those with a background in Islamic and Middle Eastern studies and African history and politics. Applicants must have experience of working on scholarly non-fiction books as well as those towards the ‘trade’ end of the spectrum. To apply, please send your CV, with details of any areas of expertise and any professional references, to the Senior Editor, Lara Weisweiller-Wu.
Internships
Hurst does not currently offer internships. Please check the website regularly for future opportunities.
