Inglorious Empire: Shashi Tharoor in conversation with Ben Judah

22 May 2017 – 19:30

We are thrilled to announce that Shashi Tharoor will be joining us in store to discuss ‘Inglorious Empire’ with Ben Judah, author of ‘This is London’.

Shashi Tharoor served for twenty-nine years at the UN, culminating as Under-Secretary-General, and continues to serve as a congress MP in India. A winner of numerous literary awards, including a Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, Inglorious Empire is his latest book. It is a ‘bold and incisive reassessment of colonialism’, recounting the story of British colonisation as an inglorious period of oppression and destruction. Where British imperialism has previously been justified as a process of enlightenment, Tharoor recounts how Britain’s might was established by pillaging India.

“Ferocious and astonishing. Essential for a Britain lost in sepia fantasies about its past, Inglorious Empire is history at its clearest and cutting best.” – Ben Judah

Ben Judah is a journalist whose work has been featured in publications such as the New York Times, the Evening Standard, and the Financial Times. He has authored two books, the first of which, Fragile Empire, was a study of Vladimir Putin’s Russia, expunging propagandistic depictions of the country and highlighting the stagnation of Putin’s regime. His latest title, This is London, is an ‘epic account of contemporary London’, charting the city’s various migrant communities, their lots and fortunes.

We are delighted to be hosting both Shashi and Ben in store. Please join us for what promises to be a fantastic evening.
